PERSONALITY
Harte seems to be a very nice person to everyone he meets, greeting everybody with a wave and a smile. He goes out of his way to help people, aid them in any way he can, even if it means taking a lot of time from himself or sacrificing something of his own. Whenever someone feels depressed he'd offer words to pick them back up, with his nice and calm voice that always keeps smooth. It seems impossible to get him angry, impossible to get on his bad side at all and he seems ever ready to forgive.
However, this is just bullshit.
It's a social mask, created by him in order to get away with the horrible crimes he commits by appearing non-suspect. He honestly cares little for anyone, and if he really does give a damn about someone then it's so he can manipulate them to get what he wants. He views everyone as being beneath him, tools to be used as stepping stones for him to get higher and higher. In fact he seems to enjoy using people, making them suffer both mentally and physically. He especially loves it when people finally break underneath him, losing all will that they once had. It gives him a rush unlike anything else, indescribably and amazing.
His view is that everybody is truly like this, and he's the only one who accepts this fact. He knows, for certain, that humans are all hateful and selfish, only truly caring about themselves. Any blocking of this is lying to oneself because they cannot bare to face it, for the horror. That’s what makes him better; he accepts the one truth.
Harte knows that the best way to get what he wants is to make people think he’s a good person; so when acting as his true self he dons a mask and cloak to take up the name “Fiend”. He does well to keep his inner thoughts and ambitions in check; making him totally unassuming and the least likely person to be thought as his true persona.
His ambition is to create perfect chaos, to turn everyone against one another in their base primal state. Like animals. He will only be satisfied when the world is a complete hell, when no one trusts each other. When his truth is proven.
Humans are wicked creatures, and they deserve Hell.
HISTORY
Harte was born into a horrible family. They very rarely fed him, often beat him for no reason, blame him for all the problems that they faced and refused to let him outside of the house. The poor child spent most of his young years feeling that he was a lesser being, left alone to ponder in his mistreatment. Every day went by and he would slowly fade away, bit by bit, and felt himself dying...
So he decided to fight back. He planned everything, secretly creating weapons and scratching away at the board that blocked his windows with his fingernails. Inch by inch he worked away, keeping his 'project' under wraps from his parents, till eventually he saw the first real light he had for his whole life. He tore away the boards, filled with confidence from the beautiful sight of light, and smashed through the window with his own body.
Injured by the fall and bleeding heavily he fought through this and limped his way away from his prison, slowly losing his energy till he fell to the floor. Not wanting to go back to that hell he dragged himself on the ground into an alleyway, where he finally fainted. He would've bled out there if it weren't for his 'saviour'.
His saviour was a cruel State Alchemists who doing experimentation on the Human mind. Their goal was to create soldiers who would do whatever they were told, gladly, and live only to fight and serve the higher-ups in the military. Finding Harte gave him someone to experiment on; someone who would never be missed, someone who nobody would look for.
The mental anguish Harte went through was nothing short of cruel. Day by day it went on, slowly bending his will. It’s easy to assume that one day Harte snapped. He went along with what the State Alchemist said, pretended to do as he said unquestionably. Then he stroke. It wasn’t quick, Harte wanted him to pay. He made sure that the Alchemist felt at least a fraction of his pain before he passed.
He looked upon the documents he had made; studied them carefully. Harte began to think. He could use this. Now that he knew the truth of people he could spread it out; he could make the world his ultimate dream. The mere thought made him giddy. The notes contained everything he needed; now he just needed people to test it on.
Just a random homeless man; nobody anyone would miss. He altered him, changed him. Explored how the mind worked and ultimately improved on the Alchemist’s work. He learned how nerves worked, how people felt emotions, how to make people calm and angry. He learnt to understand how people worked.
But it was imperfect. There were spouts of will in the homeless man, little bits now and again. And then there was himself as an example; he had resisted and so could others. It was then he decided that he would be able to learn more as a State Alchemist, if the man who had made him as he was could get so far with their knowledge what could he achieve? It was common sense.
And so he applied, though not as his ambitions would. He knew that would get him accepted. No, he applied as more of a man who would help those in the military deal with their problems. It was a traumatic job at times, after all, yes?
Plus, It gave him more test subjects…
ALCHEMY/SKILLS
Alchemy
Along with the average basic Alchemy that all Alchemists can perform, Harte has developed his own kind. To use it he requires his special gloves, which have a transmutation circle on the palm of the hand and on each of the tips of the fingers. Its nature can be split up into sections.
Nerves
Harte can alter the way someone’s nerves work. The most “basic” of his specific Alchemy. With it he can block messages from travelling down someone’s body, stopping them from using a specific part of them, make them feel a certain sensation, from a mere tingling to excruciating pain, or control that part of the body. Depending on where he touches it changes what he can effect; generally speaking where he touches anything past that is what he can effect. For example; if he were to grab someone’s shoulder he could make it so that they cannot move the connected arm.
For blocking movement; it generally lasts from any amount of time between a second to twelve hours after Harte stops using the alchemy on them depending on what Harte wishes.
For feelings; it generally lasts for any amount of time between a second to an entire day after Harte stops using the alchemy on them depending on what Harte wishes.
For control; it can only last for as long as Harte has contact and is using the alchemy on them.
Memories
Harte can alter memories in two ways: Removal and implantation.
Removal is a lot easier then implantation, though it has conditions. First, and most obviously, Harte must know the memory he is removing. Second, Harte must have contact with the target’s head and have full concentration for thirty seconds. The process is not perfect, and memories can possibly return partially (though never completely) if the target is talked to them about them with details or is shown an object important to that memory. If the target resists the process can take up to ten minutes.
Implantation is incredibly difficult for Harte to do, as it requires making a memory from scratch. There will some details missing, some oddities or other things that may allow the target to realize the memory is fake. In order for Harte to implant a memory he must have constant contact with the target’s head for ten straight minutes with complete concentration. If the target resists, the process can take up to an hour.
Emotions
By far the most complex and complicated part of Harte’s alchemy, he can alter someone’s emotions.
The ‘easier’ manner of which to do this is by changing their overall emotions for a period of time. Harte can make someone’s primary emotion, for a time, be what he wills it. Anger, happiness, sadness, excitement; any one or mixture he wishes. He requires contact with the target’s head for ten minutes, or an hour if met with resistance. The effect can last for any time between an hour to a week, depending on Harte’s wishes.
The harder manner is to change someone’s emotional response to a certain person. Harte can make it so that someone’s emotional response to seeing someone is different; effectively altering their relationship. A friend to just another person, a rival to a close ally, a lover to a sworn enemy. He requires constant contact with the head for twenty minutes, two hours if the target resists. The effect can last any time between an hour to an entire month, depending on how Harte wills it.
Skills
Harte’s abilities are not just confined to Alchemy. He has trained himself in other skills as well.
Combat Style
Harte’s combat style focuses on grabbing onto his opponents so that he can use his Alchemy on them effectively, using such tricks as moving someone’s arm behind them and locking them into position. Going to strike him is not a good idea, as you’d be freely giving him a part of your body which he can move around and put you in a position where he can access your head: Then it’s game over, all he needs to do is alter the nerves for the rest of your body and you can’t even move.
Guns
Harte’s not an idiot, he knows there’ll be times when he can’t use his alchemy in battle effectively. For those moments there’s the good ol’ guns. He keeps a pistol on him at all times and is trained well enough to use it like any trained member of the military can. He’s not amazing at it, but he’s at least respectable.
SAMPLE
(Notes: Taken from a sheet I made a while ago, the characters are... Fairly similar, so I thought it made sense to use this. Plus it's 3am so...)
Yuuki walked through the apartment complex with one hand in his pocket and the other holding a bag of shopping, whistling a little tune that he was making up as he went along. His step seemed to have spring in it as we went along, his head held high with a smile across his face. As he got to his door he began searching his pockets for his keys when the lady who lived a few doors down passed by.
"Hello, Dares-san."
Yuuki turned his head to face her. "Oh, hello there." He said in a cheery tone, lowering his bag onto the floor and leaning on the door. "I just went out shopping, it's been quite the boring day. I'm afraid there's not much for me to do now, seen as I'm moving out this week." He said, changing his tone at the end to a slightly sadder one.
The lady sighed. "I'll miss you. You've been good company to me, such a nice fellow."
Yuuki chuckled and rubbed the back of his head. "Now now, I've not been that good. Just being myself. Anyway, I'll take this stuff in and hopefully speak to you later." He said, pulling his keys out and swinging them around his finger before putting them inside the lock. He picked up his shopping and turned to wave goodbye to the lady before he grabbed the keys and closed the door behind him.
He placed it beside the fridge and began putting the items he had bought in, leaving one ice-lolly for himself which he put in his mouth. He closed the door with a spin on his toe before turning to face the man he had tied up on a chair, cloth stuffed in his mouth to stop him speaking. He seemed to be asleep. Yuuki grabbed a chair and placed it in front of the man, balancing the lolly in his mouth as he leaned forward and prodded the man in the eye to wake him up. "Rise and shine..." He said as he pulled the cloth from his mouth, the words slightly distroted.
"Why..."
Yuuki chuckled heartily as he pulled the ice-lolly out of his mouth to speak properly. "Eh, you looked at me kinda funny. Plus I've been bored recently." He said, as if it justified what he was doing, before he shoved the cloth back into the man's mouth. He placed the ice-lolly back in his own mouth as he stood up, walking over to grab a spoon. He turned to face the man with a creepy smile. "You know... I've always wondered if it was possible to gouge someone's eye out with a spoon..."
