Deep green eyes blinked open and a pale hand came up to shield them from the harsh rays of the sun, falling across the girl's face as the meat truck, which had served as her only source of shade, finally sputtered to life and drove away, belching out fumes and smoke as it did so. She had slept soundly through the noise, but the light was too much even for her. "Eh...so bright..." she complained, pushing herself into a more upright position. She had to look around, for yet another night had gone by and she wasn't entirely sure where she had fallen asleep.
She was obviously in an alley of some kind, giving a whole new meaning to her nickname. It wasn't as dirty as some she'd seen, but it was still far from an ideal place to sleep. Though she supposed she should have gotten up, she honestly didn't have the energy. She laid her head back against the brick wall, her eyes sliding closed again. Thanks to that offending beam of sunlight, though, any attempts she might have made to get back to sleep were cut short. To anyone looking at her, though, she might have looked either asleep or dead. She didn't move a muscle; it required too much energy, energy she didn't feel like conjuring up.
Finally, her stomach rumbled, breaking not only the illusion but also her concentration. She began the count in her head, calculating when last she had eaten. Her last round of shopping had been so pitiful that she had had to ration her food, meaning she had last eaten...almost two days ago. Damn. She mumbled irritably and her hand flew to the bags at her side...and hit the cold, slimy pavement. Her eyes flew open and her head snapped to the side, landing on the empty space beside her where her food had been the night before. "Shit!" she cursed, sitting upright and looking around in the foolish hope that she might have hidden it or put it somewhere else. But even she wasn't that dumb. Great.
With a sigh that spoke volumes and threatened tears, Rio leaned back against the wall, her mind scrambling furiously as she pondered her situation. She had no food. She had no money. She had no food. She had no place to stay. She was screwed. Thank the heavens she had been sitting on her bag with her clothes...THAT at the very least was safe. But now she was officially and unquestionably screwed. And this meant she only had one option.
Begging wasn't something Rio really enjoyed, not as proud as she was. Begging for other people's blind kindness was something she absolutely despised, for the very least because no one seemed to have any. It was demeaning and humiliating and, most of the time, usually got her more harm than good. Most people were more content to lecture or ignore her than reach somewhere into their hearts, and hopefully their purses, and pull out something that would actually be of use to the homeless girl. Words and intentions were next to useless to her.
But despite her long list of protests and mental rants about the situation and what she was going to have to do if she wanted to eat, Rio scooted towards the corner, now sitting just inside the alley, staring up at the crowd flowing past her with narrowed, searching eyes. This was what she referred to as "lazy begging". Though she was pretty stupid for doing it rather than getting up and finding someone, she was too tired to even think about going through that much effort. Finally, she extended her hand and grabbed at the first pair of pants her small fingers could find. Gripping with enough force to grab attention but not near enough force to trip, she tilted her head up to look at whoever it was she had caught. "Do you have any food?" she asked. Her tone was bored and almost nonchalant...she was so used to this now that she wasn't even really putting up much of an effort. Experience had proven to her that this was basically a futile fight...she would let this one go and then move onto the next one and so on and so forth until some unlucky bastard had something on him.
